Notes on Canada
What will follow may be a wide generalization, so I will be specific and get to the point.
Walking around the office here in Calgary, there seems to be a lot of diversity, rivaling that of downtown New York City. Every shade and every color, and perhaps even more importantly, there were just more of that in general. And everything was just business as usual.
That’s not to say there isn’t racism or bigotry in Canada. Truth is, I’ve never heard of cases, but the skeptic in me and the smart money says there is probably enough to go around. I noticed there were quite a few Sikhs around, so indicated by their distinctive turbans, and I can’t help but think when was the last time I saw someone wearing a turban in the United States. Why do I feel like in these “enlightened times”, that they perhaps wouldn’t even feel comfortable walking on Main St., USA? Maybe it’s just a coincidence.
Still, I can’t help but feel that there aren’t as many people here who are as weary of people in turbans, or if more Canadians don’t want Muslims, Arabs, Persians, Appalachians, or WHATEVER in their communities than their counterparts south of the border. I am deeply concerned that this particular brand of hatred and fear is taking root in too many people’s hearts, and that a very dark cloud is indeed looming over the horizon.
The war isn’t out there, thousands of miles away in a place you can’t pronounce. It’ll be right there, wherever you are.
